“It is kind of like alcoholism. … Once you drink then you know. You may be born a homosexual or with homosexual tendencies, but if you remain celibate then you never express them” / Queerty

I read this article today on Queerty.com (A Great Gay Blog). It made me think about how straight men tend to look at lesbians in a different way than they do gay men. If a man is homosexual, it’s because he was genetically predisposed to being so. But if a woman is homosexual, then there must have been an abusive man in her past the DROVE her to it. This Psychiatrist (and I use the term lightly), makes the argument that female homosexual behavior is more of a choice, than it is for men. He makes the assertion that lesbian behavior is on the increase in his country because more women are ‘choosing’ to do so.
I always take offense at someone insinuating that I’m a lesbian because some man somewhere in my past did something terrible to me. I was one of those lucky kids that grew up in the suburbs with my parents who were married forever, and had a pretty statndard suburban upbringing. We weren’t rich, but we were pretty well off. I never wanted for anything that I really needed and got most of the things that I really wanted on top of that. My Mom was a religious person who shared her beliefs with me, and my father was just a good man who taught me to repect other people and make up my own mind about things based on facts. But from as far back as I can remember, I was a lesbian. Even before I had any idea what in the world that meant.
I grew up not giving a second thought to boys, and only dated because that was the only way to be with my friends once they all started dating. I got married, because that’s what I thought I was supposed to do, even though sex with my husband was nauseating to me and was a constant source of argument for the ten years of our marriage. Not because of anything he did or didn’t do, but because I just didn’t like it. Eventually, I just couldn’t take the fighting, and lying, anymore. So if there was ever a choice made, it was to stop pretending that I wasn’t a lesbian. There was never a choice to be one. I just was, am, and always will be a lesbian. Not because a man did something to me that made me that way, but because I was born that way. From when I was a little girl crying because the boys wouldn’t let me play football anymore when my breasts started growing, to today.
So if this ‘psychiatris’ believes that the reason more women are exhibiting homosexual behavior in his country is because more woman are choosing lesbian relationships over heterosexual relationships in order to escape abusive men, then what does that say about his view of the men there? Is he saying that more and more men there are becoming abusive towards women, so much so that they are driving women into the arms of other women? Or is it that a straight man just can’t see how any woman could not ‘want’ them? So it MUST be a irrational reaction to situational stress and crisis. The straight male ego is astounding!
